Covid - 19 Teamsters Local Union No. 91 Update
Updated On: Mar 15, 2020

Teamsters Local Union No. 91 – COVID-19

We want to assure our Members that we are continuing to monitor the COVID-19 outbreak, and the impact it has on our workplaces. The impact of the virus, and response to it, are unprecedented and evolving quickly. Our Members safety remains our primary concern.

As circumstances change, we want to remind our Members of the following:

  • Take reasonable steps to reduce risks to your own health and to prevent the spread of the virus by:
    • Wash your hands thoroughly and frequently;
    • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands;
    • Cough or sneeze into your arm / sleeve and not your hands;
    • Clean and disinfect your workstations, vehicles and equipment frequently;
    • Practice social distancing when appropriate;
    • If you begin to feel ill or develop symptoms, consult your Employer for advice and / or your Local Health Authority immediately;
    • If you are concerned about an underlying condition that makes you more susceptible, please get advice from Local or Provincial Health Authorities or your doctor.

  • Do your best to stay informed:
    • Be aware of recommendations from our health authorities (some links are posted below);
    • Be cautious of statements from unofficial sources;
    • Document any steps taken in the event you are required to seek medical assistance or are asked by your Employer to self-quarantine.

  • Be vigilant in the workplace:
    • Stay informed about your workplace policies and recommendations for safe work and abide by your Employer’s directions;
    • Take all reasonable precautions;
    • Advise your Employer of any unsafe conditions and avoid situations where your safety or your co-worker’s safety is at risk.

  • Advise Stewards of any breaches or potential breaches of the collective agreement:
    • Obey now and grieve later except in unsafe situations;
    • For example, if you have been asked to stay at home because of recent travel, and you feel it is not warranted, obey and ask your Union Steward to file a grievance;
    • Keep your Business Representatives informed.

  • Be proactive in finding alternative childcare:
    • Keep your Employer informed of any potential problems;
    • Document steps you have taken;
    • Be flexible and open to reasonable alternatives.

  • Employment interruptions:
    • If there is an interruption in employment – eg. a lay-off or temporary closure – apply for EI benefits as soon as possible;
    • Advise the Local Union and ask for a withdrawal card if the lay-off is expected to be greater than thirty (30) days.

Teamsters Local Union No. 91 remains in contact with your Employers on a regular basis to ensure that your safety remains a priority. We will continue to operate and represent our Members throughout this difficult crisis.  Local 91 will follow all provincial and localized health directives as issued by authorities during this crisis in the interest of our Member’s safety and public health.

We must remain vigilant to ensure our Members are able to perform their jobs in a safe working environment at all times.  As we represent an array of industries, many of our Members will be called upon during this crisis.  For example:

  • To ensure retirement home residents are safe and cared for;
  • To ensure the warehousing supply chain continues to provide adequate food and household essentials;
  • To ensure our couriers deliver medical supplies and other urgent items on-time and safely in the public forum;
  • To ensure our hospitals are safe by providing enhanced levels of security;
  • To ensure freight deliveries of critical items continue to safely move on our public highways;

There are many more examples highlighting the role our Members will play in supporting the public through the difficult times ahead.  Our Members are the cornerstone within our successful workplaces.  It is paramount we support and participate in open and two-way communication between the Employer and ourselves. We are Teamster Strong!

Stay united, strong and above all safe through the challenging times ahead.

Brian MacDonald

President – Teamsters Local Union No. 91
